The goal of School of Sciences of Guru Nanak College is to create scientific workforce with sound theoretical as well as skilled knowledge by administering latest ICT enabled tools for teaching and learning. The School of Sciences offers Undergraduate programmes to the ambitious students to become Professionals in the Basic science subjects like Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology and also in the Applied science subjects like Biotechnology and Visual communication. To improve the career prospects, Postgraduate programmes are offered in Chemistry, Mathematics and Zoology. Ph. D. Research programmes are offered in Chemistry and Zoology to give students an opportunity to delve deeper into the subject with a passion. The curriculum will cater the learning needs of the students in all aspects like enhancing the scientific knowledge, equipping with the technical skills as required by the industries, helping in acquiring the soft-skills very much needed to cope with the corporate world. The curriculum also emphasizes on the experiential learning aspects like internships, projects and regular industrial visits.
The School of Sciences fosters innovations by providing adequate infrastructure needed like smart classrooms, well equipped spacious laboratories functioning by following good safety practices. There are 4 Wet laboratories to give Chemistry practical training, the Physics department enjoys 14 Work bench tables with AC / DC provision along with a Darkroom to perform light related experiments, well equipped Audio lab is the special feature of Visual communication, Herbarium and Museum of life science departments have a wide collection of flora and fauna respectively to kindle the students interest in the subject. The Plant tissue culture laboratory of Biotechnology department offers the necessary training needed for the students to learn the modern agricultural techniques.
Advanced instruments needed for physical sciences like UV-Vis spectrophotometer, Electronic balance, Polarimeter, Cathode ray oscilloscope, Vacuum Tube Voltmeter, Spot Galvanometer, Function generators and the demonstration kits like Earth Inductor, Hibbert’s Magnetic Standard, Dip Circle, Electronic Work benches give hands-on experience to the students. The Industrial grade stainless steel Fermenter, Bio-safety cabinet, Thermocycler, Electrophoretic units, Bioccular bright field, Phase contrast- cum - dark field and Inverted microscope are used by the life science students to hone the technical skills. The Panasonic video cameras and Multimedia systems along with other facilities attract the students to Visual communication department. The Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi, has sanctioned a grant of 104 lakhs in 2018, under Star college scheme for the quality enhancement of undergraduate science courses.
To nurture the inquisitive minds, well designed research laboratories with all necessary equipment like UV-Cabinet, HPLC, Muffle furnace, Ultrasonicator bath, Rotary evaporator and Sonicator probe to investigate science problems are in usage. Nearly, 200 lakh has been sanctioned by UGC, DST- SERB, CSIR, MoEF, TNSCST and ICAR, for various major and minor projects of science departments for carrying out research.
The School of Science offers various skills-based vocational training courses such as Food processing, Organic farming and Vermicomposting, Mushroom cultivation, Forensic science, Wild life photography, Ecotourism and Sericulture, Hygiene products making, Ornamental Fish breeding, Simple chemicals manufacturing etc, to motivate the students to become entrepreneurs. The School of Science regularly conducts hands-on workshops for the students to get acquainted with identifying adulteration, making of detergents and disinfectants, aquaculture and assembling of solar panel etc.
The School of Science has supportive Alumni to motivate the students in all aspects like career guidance, pre-placement training, industrial placements, providing endowments and delivering guest lectures etc, so as to uphold and improve the reputation of the institution and also to set platforms for the upcoming graduates and postgraduates to perform better in their career.
The School of Science has also signed MOU's with Industries and Professional bodies to pave way for conducting various collaborative programmes, through which students get exposure to other premier institutions. After graduating from the School of Science, a student can be placed in various industries or join higher studies or can become an entrepreneur, thus attaining holistic development for becoming a good citizen of the nation.

40 Students of III BSc. Biotechnology attended a session about essential oils and market segmentation on July 15. The students gained knowledge about the value of essential oils for their therapeutic properties, use in aromatherapy, skincare, and natural medicine. On August 13, 2024, the Programme of Biotechnology organised an invited talk on Classroom to Lab: Charting your path in Biosciences. Dr. Aneesh Nair, Associate Professor of Allied Sciences, Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education, Kanyakumari, was the Chief Guest. In his talk, Dr Nair provided career guidance to the students in the field of Biotechnology linking everyday products to the field of Biotechnology. He emphasized the importance of genomics in advancing personalized medicine and other areas. Around 120 students participated in the event.
Invited Talk on “Understanding Vector Calculus from A Physics Perspective” Programme of Physics (Physics Association) in collaboration with the Guru Nanak Centre for Consultancy and Outreach Initiatives, organized a seminar titled "Understanding Vector Calculus from a Physics Perspective" on the 26th of February 2024. The distinguished resource person for the seminar was Dr. M. In celebration of National Science Day, the Guru Scinet - Science club (Club ID: VP-TN0151, affiliated to the Vigyan Prasar, Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi) at Guru Nanak College (Autonomous), Chennai, organized a "Expo cum Interdepartmental competitions on Scientific Knowledge for Well-being" in collaboration with the Guru Nanak Institution's Innovative Council. The objective of the event was to educate students about issues like the use of Teflon cookware, plastic containers, biobased medicines, natural disasters like tremors, e-waste management, Aqua, Seri, and Api culture, as well as the improper use of mobile phones, among other things. Nearly 456 students from different disciplines visited the expo, which was free to everyone and provided benefits. Two senior staff members, Dr. T. Subhramaniyan, Head, Department of Mathematics and Dr.T.Saroja, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, judged the exhibits and selected the three best teams.

Devasenapathy, Senior Research officer from Science City, Chennai. He highlighted about the various job opportunities for the Science students, the contribution of Science city in the student learning process and also mentioned about the various State and National schemes for science fund raising. The inauguration session was followed by the Science Exhibition. The Science club student members demonstrated and explained about the various Science experiments and concepts like Object detections by matrix, Triangle puzzle, 3D Hologram Projector, Circle Theorem, Deadly Red Maths Games, Golden Rain, Dancing Blue Flame, pH Indicator, Distillation, Wind Mill, Light Fidelity, Diffraction, Polarisation, Dispersion, Aquaponics, Genetically Modified Fish, Refractometer, Total Solids, Fossils, Lung Model, Seed Ball Making, Different Fields of Biotechnology, DNA Isolation by using Household Chemicals, Importance of Fibonacci Series in Biology. The programme was attended by 120 Science club student and faculty members, Dean of various Schools, Heads of various Programmes and faculty members graced the occasion.
To commemorate International Microorganisms Day, GNC Bioclues - MSI student unit organized a one-day symposia on “Science for sustainability” in association with Microbiologist’s society on Sep 18, 2024. A book of abstracts authored by Guru Nanak College students across various disciplines published with ISBN was released by eminent scientists Prof, Dr. Sultan Ahmed Ismail, Member, State Planning Commission, Government of Tamil Nadu and Dr. V. Umashankar, Scientist E, Virology & Biotechnology, ICMR-NIRT, Chennai. Around 150 students participated in the event.
To encourage scientific awareness on the outbreak of various viral diseases and their preventive measures, the Student Chapter at Guru Nanak Centre for Research “GNC BIOCLUES” organized a Rangoli Competition for students themed “Viral Diseases” in association with Microbiologists Society, India,. The students participated with great zeal and enthusiasm gaining insight on creating awareness in the public as individuals. The Guest of Honour was Dr N Unnamalai, Principal Scientist from Shri AMM MCRC who judged the best rangolis, and declared the winners of the program. The winning entries have been sent to Microbiologists Society, India towards consideration for State Level Awards.
Student Chapter at Guru Nanak College, under the appellation “GNC_BIOCLUES” continues to promote the great work that Microbiologists Society India is already undertaking since last 25 years. Under the guidance of the Management, with the ideology of “Catch them Young” GNC BIOCLUES is actively engaged in transforming scientific knowledge and know-how through creative engagement to foster a structured approach widening quality standards for research training in microbiology and biotechnology. In a recent insightful talk at Guru Nanak College, APJMJ Sheik Dawood, Co-Founder of the APJ Abdul Kalam International Foundation, emphasized the revolutionary impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in various academic fields, including genomics, biology, zoology, physics, chemistry and how AI can accelerate scientific discovery, enhance data analysis, foster innovation across these diverse and in creating a plethora of job opportunities.
GNC Astro Club organized a hands-on training session (29.08.2024), for student volunteers and members. A total of 95 students from both science and non-science backgrounds, across both shifts, participated in the program and learnt principles of telescopes, learnt how to handle telescopes, and explored concepts in astronomy.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the National Standards Body of India under Dept. of consumers affairs , Ministry of consumers affairs, Food& Public distribution, Govt.of India. BIS has taken initiative of creating Standards Clubs in educational institutions comprising teachers and students as members. Through a variety of activities under these clubs, students get learning opportunities in the field of quality and standardization. Guru Nanak College Standards Club, GNC BIS Club , in view of World Standards Day on Oct 14th 2023, BIS, Chennai Branch Office organised Youth to Youth Campaign. 30 volunteers from GNC BIS club were selected and given hands on training on 27.09.2023 by Ms. P.Suhasini, a Graduate Engineer , CNBO, BIS. The Youth to Youth Quality Connect Campaign started on 10.10.2023 in the college with a flag-off event by Principal Dr.M.G.Ragunathan, along with Dr.R.Chitra, Staff Coordinator, GNC BIS Club, Dr.J.Jayanthi, Dean Sciences, Dr.R.M.Ezhilarasi, Head, Department of Chemistry. Each selected Manak Mitra was required to educate minimum 25 youth for this campaign. Every volunteer was provided with a cap and badge..During their interaction with youth, the volunteers are expected to played Quality Connect video and also distributed pamphlets about BIS and its activities, common household items under mandatory certification and demonstrate BIS website, BIS Care App and Know your Standards feature. These Campaigns are aimed at achieving the target of making every youth aware of the Indian Standards and its importance in our everyday life. Mr. Jose Charles enlightened the students about the Bureau of Indian Standards, Govt. of India. The inaugural ceremony of the Mathematics Association Matrix Minds 2024-25 was held on August 8. Dr K Srinivas, Professor, Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc), Taramani, Chennai was the Chief Guest. The investiture ceremony involved the formal induction of student office bearers for this academic year.
The National Science Day is celebrated on February 28th to commemorate the discovery of the Raman Effect by Sir C V Raman in 1928. The School of Sciences in collaboration with Guru Nanak Centre for Innovation and Incubation Centre, organized various inter-department events under the theme ‘Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat’ to inculcate scientific temper among the student’s fraternity. Dr S N Jaisankar, Chief Scientist & Head from the polymer Science and Technology division, CLRI inaugurated the occasion and spoke about “Raman Effect”, research activities of CLRI and the importance of patenting. The Programme of Plant biology and Plant Biotechnology hosted a Rangoli event under the title, “Indian Traditional Knowledge”. 21 students participated and showcased their talents. Nearly 54 students of both UG & PG Science departments participated in the Essay writing competition hosted by M.Sc. Zoology Programme under the theme “Transforming India into a Developed Nation”. Paper Presentation under the theme “Innovation, Science and Technology” was hosted by the Programme of Biotechnology and a total 22 presentations were made. 25 students have participated in the Poster making competition in the theme “Digital Transformation for Sustainable India” organized by the Programme of Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology and Physics. Model Making under the theme “Environmental Sustainability” was hosted by the Chemistry Programme, in which nearly 11 students exhibited their talents. The overall trophy under the UG Category was bagged by the Programme of Biotechnology, and the Programme of Chemistry won the overall trophy under PG Category.
Guru Nanak Institution's Innovation Council, in association with the School of Sciences, Plant Biology, and Plant Biotechnology, organized the "Grains of Tomorrow: Millet Magic & Plant Power Expo '' on February 26, 2024. The Resource Person Mr. Anil Kumar S provided an analytical overview of millet consumption trends, underscoring their resurgence as a healthy food choice. He discussed how millets could be adapted across various cuisines, noting their advantages as a gluten-free option. Ms. Menaka, Director - Mannvasanai Traditional Food Pvt Ltd discussed the traditional and medicinal value of millets, emphasizing their historical significance in indigenous diets and roles in traditional healing practices. Mr. Srinivasan, Proprietor Gramiyam, highlighted the critical role of youth in promoting millets and sustainable agriculture.

The industrial visit to IGCAR Kalpakkam Nuclear Reactor on 23rd February 2024, was organized as part of the M.Sc Mathematics curriculum to provide students with practical exposure to concepts, deepen their understanding of nuclear reactors, and explore career opportunities in the field. Dr. Parasuraman Pargunan, a scientist at IGCAR, provided an insightful introduction to the functioning of nuclear reactors and their significance in various applications.
The Algal collection study tour for the 2023 Batch of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, held on the 19th and 20th of December 2023, in Rameswaram, emerged as a pivotal initiative in shaping the academic journey of the students. Acknowledging the profound importance of practical exposure in the realms of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, this carefully curated study tour was crafted to deliver hands-on experience, specifically emphasizing the collection of algal material.
The Potpourri Competition, an Intra-departmental event, was organized by the Department of Mathematics on 29th December 2023. The event provided a platform for students to unleash their creativity and express themselves academically. Activities like quiz and math bingo enabled students to explore their talents, develop visual communication and critical thinking skills.

The students learned to organize facts for a travelogue writing. Dr. R. Sivacoumar, Sr. Principal Scientist, explained the facilities and instruments in CSIR-NEERI and gave an insight about the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Environmental Management Plan (EMP), Environmental Monitoring, Environmental Systems Design, Modelling and Optimization, Water Quality Management, Wastewater Management and Environmental Microbiology.

The B.Sc. Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology organized an industrial visit to Goa for third year students from March 13 to March 17, 2023. Dr. J. Jayanthi, Associate Professor & Head, Mr.V.Senthil Vairavan, Assistant Professor and Mrs. M. Jayalakshmi accompanied 41 students. On day one, the students visited Baga Beach and Calangute Beach for specimen collection. The next day, the students were taken to the CSIR NIO (National Institute of Oceanography), located at Dona Paula, Goa. Shri. Kavlekar Devanand gave an overview of NIO and its departments research work, and students visited the museum and marine oceanography departments. Further he discussed marine planktons and its productivity, extracting enzymes from marine bacteria, DNA barcoding of marine creatures, and other topics. On day three, students went to a dolphin performance at Miramar Beach, where they saw Indo-Pacific Humpback dolphins and finless porpoises. This industrial visit was insight the student.

On day 1, the students travelled to Arichal Munai, Dhanush Kodi, and Sand Dunes. The far easternmost point in Southern India, Arichal Munai, lies just a few kilometres from Sri Lanka. On the second day, the students were brought to the CMFRI Mandapam Regional Centre, where they visited the museum and saw preserved algae, corals, mollusks, and crustaceans. On the third day, the students went to Rameswaram Beach to collect specimens. Mollusks, crabs, and corals are some of the specimens that were collected and preserved.

Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology, Guru Nanak College (Autonomous), were taken for an industrial visit on 11.01.2023 to Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIBA) Muttukadu. Mr. Rajamanickam, Senior Technical Officer, Crustacean Division, took students to mud crab hatchery unit where he as explained about the identification of male and female crab (Scylla serrata), fattening of mud crab, different larval stages, eye stalk ablation and about Live feed. Shri. R. Aravind, Scientist- CCD explained the different species of Penaeus, its larval stages, the importance of Penaeus indicus, importance of Artemia as a live feed for shrimps and disease management.

The Biospectra Association and the Department of Biotechnology visited the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University Horticulture Research Station, the Observatory, Mannavanur Sheep Farm, and Kodaikanal. 31 students, 2 teaching staffs, and 1 non-teaching staff visited Kodaikanal for a study tour. On day 1, the students visited the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University Horticulture Research Station and got to know about technologies in temperate horticultural crops for benefiting the farmers in Kodai Hills. On day 2, the students visited the Berijam Lake. The lake has rich flora and fauna, which makes it a region of ecological significance. On Day 3, the students visited the astronomy museum present within the campus of the Kodaikanal Observatory. As the sky was clear of mist, the students also had a chance to view the live solar image. At the Southern Regional Research Centre (SRRC), Mannavanur, Dr. G. Nagarajan, Senior Scientist, and Dr. K. Pachaiyappan, Scientist, oriented the students about the rearing of sheep, rabbits, and cattle.
The Government of India has initiated the Swachhataa Hi Seva on every October 1st in commemoration of Mahatma Gandhiji’s Birthday. In this regard the Zoological Survey of India, Marine Biology Regional Centre, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Foreshore Estate, Chennai have organized a program on Cleanliness Drive at Pulicat Lake. The M.Sc., Zoology students participated in this cleaning and collected 10 bags of garbage along the coastal as well as the island regions of Pulicat lake.

Students were exposed to various reptiles like the Pythons, Adders, Vipers, King Kobras and Fan-throated Lizards, Geckos, Star Tortoise, Giant Turtles, Kraits, Indian Monitor Lizards and Chameleons. Reptiles like Gharial, Slider Turtle, Rock Lizard, Green Iguana, Indian Flapshell Turtle, Siamese Crocodile, Spectacled Cobra, Dog-Faced Water Snake, Common Vine Snake, Common Cat Snake, Olive Keelback, Common Wolf Snake, Common Sand Boa, Indian Rock Python and Whitaker’s Boa. An inspiring museum displaying the specimens of reptiles and amphibians is another interesting feature of the Guindy Snake Park.
